Graham 1999 Quinta dos Malvedos SQVP: Tasting Notes

This page provides an overview of my notes on the Graham 1999 Quinta dos Malvedos SQVP. Apologies if the notes are brief (or non-existent); they are mainly recorded for my benefit with public distribution being a secondary priority!

I always enjoy hearing from other Port-drinkers. If you find these notes helpful; or find yourself violently disagreeing with me about them, please do not hesitate to contact me at: port@Jacob-Head.com.

The Notes

Tasting 1

Notes: Quite dark in colour but disappointingly mute on the nose and in the mouth. Very closed. Give it time and it might mature into something more interesting.

Tasted at: TPF Malvedos Tasting

Date: 22nd March 2010

Rated*: P

Tasting 2

Notes: Same colour as the other 1999s. Slightly subdued compared to the Bomfim on the nose. In the mouth this was hard work with some primary fruits and sugar appearing, but it felt rather closed and inaccessible at the moment.

Tasted at: Big Fortified Tasting, London

Date: 7th April 2011

Rated*: P+

Tasting 3

Notes: Good purply-red centre. Just about opaque. Reddish edge. Nose a step better than anything else at the tasting. Very expressive with lots of red fruits. In the mouth, extremely sweet: a hit of icing sugar. Then followed by some light fruits. Perhaps moving into strawberries? Some residual tannins. Short aftertaste. Pretty good Port and one which is becoming drinkable again.

Tasted at: Davy’s Tasting at the Woolgate

Date: 14th November 2013

Rated*: C-

Tasting 4

* A Note on Ratings

My rating system attempts to answer the question “is this a good Port?” one of three ways: N—No; P—Possibly; or C—Certainly. Ports generally are rated against others of their category. Therefore, a Ruby Port which I rate as C for Certainly good, might not be as good as a Vintage Port which receives the same rating. I sometimes modify my rating with a plus or minus indicating that the Port is better or worse than might be expected for this category.
