Niepoort 2004 “Fortnum and Mason Blend” LBV: Tasting Notes

This page provides an overview of my notes on the Niepoort 2004 “Fortnum and Mason Blend” LBV. Apologies if the notes are brief (or non-existent); they are mainly recorded for my benefit with public distribution being a secondary priority!

I always enjoy hearing from other Port-drinkers. If you find these notes helpful; or find yourself violently disagreeing with me about them, please do not hesitate to contact me at: port@Jacob-Head.com.

The Notes

Tasting 1

Notes: Fine. Will probably mature a bit. First thought a bit expensive at £15. Now revised view!

Tasted at: Uncorked Niepoort tasting with Dirk Niepoort

Rated*: P

Tasting 2

Notes: Niepoort Lodge

Tasted at: Oporto May 2009

Rated*: P

Tasting 3

Notes: Unfiltered LBV. Bottled 2008. F and M exclusive blend. Quite reddish in colour, and fairly translucent at the edge. Gave very little away on the nose. Surprisingly mute. In the mouth, again very subtle. Almost didn’t taste of anything. Perhaps some elderflower, over a sugary syrup. Slightly tannic with a peppery aftertaste. Extremely easy to drink. You could easily get through this like a soft-drink. Very unlike what I expected; it seems surprisingly mature for its age. Although this might seem like a criticism, I do not necessarily think this is a bad Port; having one that is lovely and easy to drink is some achievement. It will be interesting to revisit this in a few years when it becomes a bit more mature. And perhaps compare it to a normal 2004 Niepoort LBV.

* A Note on Ratings

My rating system attempts to answer the question “is this a good Port?” one of three ways: N—No; P—Possibly; or C—Certainly. Ports generally are rated against others of their category. Therefore, a Ruby Port which I rate as C for Certainly good, might not be as good as a Vintage Port which receives the same rating. I sometimes modify my rating with a plus or minus indicating that the Port is better or worse than might be expected for this category.
