Réccua 2004 LBV: Tasting Notes

This page provides an overview of my notes on the Réccua 2004 LBV. Apologies if the notes are brief (or non-existent); they are mainly recorded for my benefit with public distribution being a secondary priority!

I always enjoy hearing from other Port-drinkers. If you find these notes helpful; or find yourself violently disagreeing with me about them, please do not hesitate to contact me at: port@Jacob-Head.com.

The Notes

Tasting 1

Notes: Made by Caves Vale do Rodo, a Régua-based co-operative and one of the first companies to export Port directly from the Douro in the 1980s. Unfiltered LBV, bottled in 2008. Quite subdued with the grapeyness of a young vintage Port predominating. However, the aroma does not grab like a young Vintage Port: the grapes seem to be the primary aromas of this Port. Behind that there is a little rounded fruit, perhaps red currants and a lingering spiciness. In the mouth, very subdued. No immediate hit of sugar, acid or fruit. Some furry tannins form on my tongue, there is a little sensation of grapes in the back of my throat, followed by some sugar which fades quite quickly into sticky nothingness. Very straight-forward, simple Port. Nothing wrong with it. However, not very exciting and shows almost no complexity, perhaps not quite living up the expectation of an LBV.

Rated*: P

* A Note on Ratings

My rating system attempts to answer the question “is this a good Port?” one of three ways: N—No; P—Possibly; or C—Certainly. Ports generally are weighted slightly by their category. Therefore, a Ruby Port might receive a C rating for Certainly good which it might not were it to be a Vintage Port. I sometimes modify my rating with a plus or minus indicating that the Port is better or worse than might be expected for this category.
